Darker Skin Tones
Years ago, laser hair removal technology predominantly worked on pale skin with dark hair. Olive, Asian and black-skinned people were usually advised against the treatment because the light energy is attracted to pigment, so they were at risk of burning the skin surrounding the hairs being treated. However, more up-to-date laser hair removal technology can be adjusted to different wavelengths so the skin doesn’t absorb the light as much, making it safe for all skin tones. NDYAG lasers are usually safest for darker skin types.
Medication & Laser Hair Removal
Some types of drugs can cause light sensitivity in the skin, increasing the likelihood of you burning during laser hair removal treatment, or leaving you with hyperpigmentation (dark patches on the skin). These include some antibiotics, anti inflammatories, acne medication, and some types of medication prescribed for cancer and diabetes. For this reason, it’s important to provide information on all medication you are currently taking before you have treatment - even if you don’t believe it’s relevant.
One of the main dangers with laser hair removal is unscrupulous, unregulated providers. Be sure to choose a provider or clinic that is regulated by the Care Quality Commission or other relevant regulatory body. This way, you can be assured the practitioner carrying out the treatment has met minimum training requirements and that the clinic meets the appropriate health, safety and hygiene standards. Never trust an unregulated or unregistered provider to deliver laser hair removal treatment. The lasers used are powerful and should only be handled by a qualified, skilled professional.
