What Happens During Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Laser hair removal treatment works by permanently damaging or destroying the individual hair follicles (i.e., the root of each hair beneath the surface of the skin.) This prevents the hair from regrowing in the treated area.

In order to be effective, the hairs must be treated when they are in the growth part of their life cycle, known as the anagen phase. Unfortunately, not all of your hairs will be at this exact stage during treatment, so a number of treatments are required to target as many hairs as possible.

  • Laser hair removal is a pain free treatment, so there’s no need to feel nervous beforehand.
  • You’ll be asked to shave the area before your appointment so that the laser can target the hairs at the root.
  • Your practitioner will ensure you are comfortable and relaxed, before cleansing your skin thoroughly.
  • The treatment will then begin. The practitioner will direct the laser light at the area being treated. This will feel a bit like an elastic band being twanged against the skin and will create a warming sensation.
  • After treatment, your skin may be a little red and uncomfortable, but this should subside within 24 hours or so. You should begin to see a reduction in hair growth from the very first treatment, but you will need to have from six to eight treatments in order to achieve permanent results.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for the laser hair removal results guarantee?

Close Icon

You will need a suitability assessment during your consultation to establish whether the results for life guarantee could be suitable for you. Typically clients with thicker, darker, coarser hair, or a lot of dark hair in the area to be treated, are the most likely to be suitable.

If you have had poor results with another provider and your hair is dark enough, our Results for Life package could be suitable for you. Please refer to the terms and conditions for further information, or speak to one of our specialists.

There are a few instances where Results for Life will not be suitable.

  • Lighter hair colours – if you have blonde, white, red or grey hair on the area to be treated, as it has little to no pigment, you are unlikely to see great results. This is because there is simply not enough melanin in the hair to attract the laser.
  • If you have fine vellus hair on the area, such as on the face, the hair is often not thick or dark enough to be treated.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding – for client safety reasons, we are unable to treat pregnant clients, but we can re-commence treatment after a 6 week post natal check.
  • Those with specific illnesses and conditions such as PCOS or excessive hair growth, or those on certain medications.

For more information, please speak to your practitioner or refer to the terms and conditions.

What happens during my Results for Life consultation?

Close Icon

During your consultation, your practitioner will assess your suitability for treatment, including having an in depth conversation with you about your medical history, the condition of your skin, suitability of the hair for treatment as well as the benefits, and potential risks or side effects. If you are eligible and would like to book the Results for Life package, you will need to sign a contractual agreement to ensure you understand the terms, and the pre and post-treatment care to optimise and ensure results – as we ask of any laser hair removal client. Please read the terms and conditions for more info.

How many sessions of laser hair removal are included in Results for Life?

Close Icon

Laser for life includes up to a maximum of 12 sessions, plus up to 3 small area “top ups”. Depending on the client’s hair type and medical history, the length of treatment and efficacy may vary. Please read the terms and conditions for more information.

What areas do you treat with laser hair removal?

Close Icon

Our specialists treat all over the body and face. Whether it’s unwanted hair on your legs, bikini line, stomach or cheeks, we safely treat any area using medical-grade lasers.

How does laser hair removal work?

Close Icon

The laser works by damaging or permanently destroying targeted hair follicles, preventing regrowth. The laser releases light energy that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, targeting the roots beneath the skin during particular stages of their growth cycles. This damages the bulb, preventing regrowth through a process known as photothermolysis. As only 10-20% of hair is in the same phase of the growth cycle at any one time, to ensure the best results we advise a minimum of 8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on the area to be treated.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal is often likened to the sensation of a flick from an elastic band, and while it may cause some initial discomfort, the pain tends to decrease as more hair follicles are destroyed. The level of discomfort varies based on the area treated and every individual’s sensitivity. Our specialists prioritise your comfort and safety throughout the treatment process, so we will use a cooling mechanism and give you some time for breaks if you need.

What results will I get with laser hair removal?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal can give long lasting results and permanent hair reduction, and some of our clients never have to shave again. Optimum results are typically seen after completing a series of 8-12 sessions, consistently 4-6 weeks apart, resulting in significant hair reduction and smoother, irritation free skin. In certain cases, clients may require additional sessions as needed.

How often should I have laser hair removal?

Close Icon

We generally recommend spacing sessions between 4 and 6 weeks apart, depending on the area and hair growth, but your specialist will advise on the frequency of your treatments to obtain optimum results. This is to ensure the hair follicles are targeted at the correct stage of their growth cycle.

Why do I need a course of treatment?

Close Icon

Hair has four phases of growth: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. To effectively prevent regrowth, it is crucial to target the hair follicle during the anagen phase, the stage where the follicle is attached to the bulb. As individual hairs will most likely be in different stages of the hair growth cycle at any one time, a course of treatment is necessary to effectively damage or destroy all follicles at the right time. Your specialist will discuss this with you during your initial consultation. As a general guideline, we typically recommend 8-12 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

Close Icon

There are several things you should do to prepare for laser hair removal:

  • Avoid sun exposure  including sunbathing or, sunbeds. If you are tanned you must leave at least 2 weeks before you can have treatment.
  • Avoid waxing or plucking before treatment as this can interrupt the hair growth cycle. Instead, shave using non-perfumed products 24 hours before your appointment, but not on the same day.
  • Ensure you are clear of fake tan when you have treatment
  • Remove all makeup, fragrances and deodorants on the area to be treated prior to your appointment

Adhering to this guidance will ensure you have the best results and you minimise the risk of reactions.
