What are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are small, brown or flesh-coloured growths that protrude from the surface of the skin. They vary in size from a few millimetres up to around five centimetres.

They are made up of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin. Collagen is a normal type of protein found throughout the body.

Common in both men and women, around one in four people will develop a tag at some point in their lives.

HOW DO YOU GET SKIN TAGS?

Often mistaken for warts, they can appear anywhere on the body, but are typically found in areas where skin repeatedly rubs against itself, such as armpits, groin, neck and eyelids.

Skin tags present no medical threat and don’t usually cause pain or discomfort. However, they can make people feel self-conscious and can hurt if caught on clothing. They can also cause issues for men when shaving.

HOW TO REMOVE SKIN TAGS

Over-the-counter treatments are available, but can often lead to bleeding and scarring. By far the safest and most successful way of removing skin tags is to have it done by a specialist at a clinic like sk:n.

At your consultation, they will decide the best possible treatment depending on the size and position of your tag. Treatment is quick and simple with a range of options tailored around you.

Cryosurgery uses liquid nitrogen to freeze off the tag and is normally quick and painless. It typically requires several sessions for the tag to fall away completely.

Ligation is where a band is gently tied around the tag, restricting its blood supply, causing it to fall away in time.

Skin tags can also be burned off or simply removed with a scalpel. These treatments are carried out under anaesthetic so you feel no pain. These treatments are often quicker than other methods and can be carried out in one day.

Laser treatments are also available and usually cause only minimal discomfort.

Skin Tag Removal FAQs

How does skin tag removal work?

Skin tags can be removed by surgical means or using laser therapy.

HOW WILL I FEEL DURING SKIN TAG REMOVAL?

Surgical treatments are conducted under local anaesthetic, so the treatment will be painless. Laser treatment may cause very slight discomfort, but is usually very mild.

Is skin tag removal the right treatment for me?

Your sk:n dermatologist will assess your skin tag at your consultation and advise you of its suitability before you commit to the procedure.

What happens after skin tag removal?

There will be a small white scar where the skin tag has been removed. Other than that, complications are rare and you can go home as soon as your anaesthetic wears off.
