Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce or prevent excess hair growth? Plus Icon

There are a number of at-home hair removal solutions – shaving, waxing, creams and hair removal devices. They will often only deliver temporary results and could be painful, messy or time-consuming. Laser hair removal at sk:n is the most effective option, as it minimises the risk of folliculitis, rashes and can reduce hair growth permanently.

  • Shaving – the quickest and easiest method of hair removal but can result in shaving rash, ingrown hairs and irritation.
  • Bleaching – won’t remove hair, but will lighten it so it’s less noticeable. This is not advisable for very sensitive skin types as it may irritate the skin.
  • Waxing, plucking or threading – all of these methods effectively pull the hair out from the root, so can reduce hair growth somewhat if done regularly. The downsides are that they tend to be painful and difficult, and can also lead to folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles).
  • Hair removal cream – dissolve the hair with a type of acid. These creams are popular because they don’t cause stubble, but can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Epilators – hair removal devices that pluck out the individual hairs with lots of tiny mechanisms like tweezers. The results last longer than shaving, but epilating can be painful and cause folliculitis.
  • Laser hair removal – a laser targets the pigment in the hair and not the skin, which damages or destroys the root, preventing regrowth. Over time after enough treatments, you’ll need to shave less, ingrown hairs are reduced, and the appearance of strawberry legs will diminish.
  • Can I get rid of excess hair permanently? Plus Icon

There is no way to completely remove all unwanted hair permanently due to hair growth cycles, hair type and changes in hormones, but there are methods which permanently reduce hair. Even when the hair follicle is damaged or destroyed via laser or electrolysis, hormonal changes can cause new follicles to develop, meaning hair will grow in that area. Laser Hair Removal is one of the most effective and long-lasting solutions for hair removal.

Can men have laser hair removal for excessive hair growth? Plus Icon

Yes. Men can have laser hair removal for unwanted hair, or excessive hair growth caused by a condition called hypertrichosis. This can affect males and females, but is very rare. Laser hair removal works equally well across the entire body and the face. From unwanted cheek hair, to an entire back, chest or stomach, laser hair removal gives long lasting and effective results.

Can I remove any hair with laser hair removal? Plus Icon

Yes – as long as the hair has enough pigment (i.e. dark enough) to attract the laser. It works best on those with darker brown or black hair, and because blonde, grey or white hair does not have enough pigment, people with those hair colours will not see great results. We can also treat all over the body and face if the hair is not too fine, such as the very fine vellus hairs on the face.

What results will I get with laser hair removal? Plus Icon

Laser hair removal is approved to deliver permanent hair reduction of up to 90%. You can expect to see your best results after a course of 8-12, after which the hair will have reduced dramatically and the skin is silky-smooth. Some clients, however, may need top ups depending on their hormonal changes over time.

How long will laser hair results last? Plus Icon

In most cases, the results will be permanent and some may never have to shave again – but this is very much dependent on the individual.
