What are lip fillers?

Lip filler, also known as lip injections or lip augmentation, is a cosmetic procedure that uses dermal fillers to enhance the shape, volume, and definition of the lips. The dermal fillers we use are made from injectable hyaluronic acid (HA), a compound that is found naturally in the body’s tissue. HA is hydrophilic which means it attracts water, hydrating and plumping the skin. Whether your goals are to plump thin lips, correct asymmetry, improve the shape to highlight your cupid’s bow, lift or add definition, lip fillers are great a semi-permanent solution for natural looking results.

You can find the full FAQ section below

How do lip fillers work?

A medically developed semi-permanent hyaluronic acid gel is injected into the lips to enhance their natural shape and plumpness.

Depending on the desired outcome, the natural structure of the lips and overall shape of the face, filler is strategically injected into different areas , such as the vermilion border (the outline of the lips), philtrum (cupid’s bow), oral commisure (the corners) or the body of the lips. This way, filler can add natural definition, volume, curve to the corner of the mouth to “upturn” the smile, enhancing their shape and fullness – and crucially, in harmony with the rest of the face. The amount of filler used and the injection technique also depends on the preferred outcome and the patient’s facial anatomy. Consulting with a qualified medical injector will help determine what you need for your goals.

All of our injectors are all registered with medical councils, and our partner of choice is Juvederm®, which ensures you’re getting quality treatment in the safest of hands.

What results will I see from lip fillers?

Lip filler will give an almost immediate result. Within 48 hours once any swelling has gone down, lips will appear fuller, hydrated and more defined. Common results from lip filler are:

  • Increased volume: Adds fullness to the lips, making them appear plumper and more pronounced.
  • Enhanced shape and definition: A more defined vermilion border (the outline of the lips) and enhanced cupid’s bow (the “V” shape in the middle of the upper lip).
  • Smoother appearance: Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on and around the lips (sometimes known as smoker’s lines)
  • Improved symmetry: If you have asymmetrical lips, lip fillers can help create more balanced and symmetrical lips by adding volume to specific areas.

The effects of lip fillers can last around 6-9 months, but the duration may vary depending on factors such as the type or thickness of filler used, your metabolism or lifestyle factors. Our experts work with the natural shape of your lips and face, helping guarantee a look that compliments your features and enhances your natural beauty.

My experience was great. Doctor Noreen Hashmi is fantastic. Very professional and attentive to all requests. She really loves her job and she does it perfectly. I'm very happy with the tear trough the Botox and the lips. Everything is very natural and she really understands the person she is treating.

Frequently asked questions about lip fillers

Depending on the individual and whether or not topical anaesthetic is used, the sensations experienced during lip filler injections will vary, ranging from some stinging and mild discomfort to a sharp pinch. At sk:n, the lip filler we use contains a numbing agent called lidocaine, and we’ll apply numbing cream beforehand if required to help minimise any discomfort – which is usually temporary and brief..

The procedure itself has minimal downtime and the only tell-tale signs of treatment could be mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites, which usually subsides within 24-48 hours.

Ideally, no. We aim for natural results that are in balance with the rest of your facial features, enhancing your lips in a beautifully subtle way. .

We prioritise safe and ethical treatment, so we won’t overfill your lips, or use techniques we deem unsafe or unnecessary. Our experts take pride in our care, building subtle and realistic results that work in harmony with your face and lip anatomy.

It’s important to us that you’re comfortable with your injector and trust you’ll get the results you want, and we know this starts with a great consultation. We take time to get to know your goals or concerns, explain the options that are suitable for you, the expected outcomes, and you won’t be rushed into your decision.

During your consultation, we will:

  • Review your medical history, allergies and suitability for treatment
  • Thoroughly understand your goals and determine the most suitable treatment options for you
  • Clearly explain the lip filler procedure, including aftercare and recovery, expected outcomes, and your cost
  • Address any questions or concerns you may have, so you feel fully informed, confident and looking forward to your lip filler treatment

If you are suitable, you may be able to have treatment immediately afterwards. We can discuss this with you during your consultation.

Lip filler typically lasts between 6 and 9, but this can vary depending on a number of factors including the viscosity or volume of filler injected, smoking or sun exposure, and your metabolism can also affect how long the results last depending on how quickly your body breaks down the filler.

Afterwards, there may be some swelling or bruising, with the swelling usually going down within 48 hours and bruising fading within a few days to a fortnight.

Your sk:n doctor or nurse prescriber will recommend an aftercare plan, including advice on what to do and not do following treatment, a concurrent skincare plan if applicable, and offer you a post-treatment review to ensure you are happy with the results.

No. We do not offer permanent lip fillers, due to the unknown long-term risks involved.

During your lip filler consultation, we’ll conduct a thorough assessment to ensure you understand the treatment, your potential outcome, to minimise the risk of unexpected results. Throughout the treatment process, we’ll show your results to ensure you’re happy. It’s important to note that swelling and bruising may happen post-treatment, so you should time for common side effects to ease before considering any additional adjustments. Sometimes, the worst of the swelling does not happen immediately (sometimes 12-24 hours after), so please try not to worry and use an ice compress to help with swelling. If you’re still unhappy with your results, we can book you in for a review 1-2 weeks later for further tweaks. We always tell every patient that achieving your goals safely may require a few sessions, as our injectors prioritise a gradual approach to avoid overfilling, which can lead to migration that gives that telltale, puffy “duck lips” look.

In very rare cases, more serious complications can happen, however our injectors are qualified to offer medical support including administering hyaluronidase which can dissolve lip filler. However, it’s important to remember that hyaluronidase can also dissolve the natural hyaluronic acid levels within your lips which can cause your lips to look smaller than before. Therefore, we reserve its use for emergencies and not solely for addressing mild dissatisfaction with results.

The amount of lip filler administered during treatment is typically measured in ml, and one vial of filler can contain 0.55 or 1ml, depending on the brand. However, the quantity you need can vary based on the size and shape of your lips, your goals, your age, and volume loss.

For context, it’s important to note that 1ml of filler is equivalent to just 1/5th of a teaspoon, which is a very small amount but can still make a visible difference to your lips.

Our injectors will determine the appropriate amount of lip filler necessary to get to your your desired results effectively and safely, which sometimes will need to be over a couple of sessions.

We mainly use Juvéderm® lip fillers which contain a hydrophilic substance called hyaluronic acid (HA), which occurs naturally in the body and attracts water to maintain skin moisture, structure and volume. The hyaluronic acid gel used in Juvéderm® fillers is a clinically formulated synthetic cross-linked compound, which mimics the body’s own hyaluronic acid.tJuvéderm® fillers are renowned for biocompatibility, safety, and with various thicknesses, their ability to enhance facial contours, add volume and smooth the lips, delivers optimal results.

We strongly advise that you should not apply makeup or skincare that is not advised by us to your lips for at least 12 hours following treatment.

‘Duck lips’ often occur with poor technique, when too much filler has been injected for the size of your lips, or outside the vermillion border, andmigrates or spreads outside of your lip line, creating an obvious ledge.

To minimise the risk of lip migration, make sure to:

  • Choose a reputable, skilled injector. Always choose someone who is a qualified medical professional with extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and injection techniquesMedical professionals are regulated by the relevant medical councils which protects both them and the client. Non-medical injectors are not regulated and therefore they may not face reperucssions if the patient suffers as a result.
  • Communicate what you’re looking for. By discussing your goals beforehand, injectors will have clearer ides of the righttreatment plan tfor you, to reduce the chances of you being unhappy with your results.
  • Start conservatively. We always advise you start with smaller amounts of filler initially and gradually build up over time if needed. This allows for a more controlled outcome, reducing the risk of migration and overwhelming your lips.
  • Follow your aftercare instructions. After your lip filler treatment, please stick to aftercare guidelines provided by your injector. This may include avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive sun exposure, and certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding or swelling.

At sk:n, you’ll only ever be treated by a fully qualified, skilled and registered healthcare professional. We only use the safe, clinical grade medical products, and our clinics are regulated by the Care Quality Commission. All of this means you are in the best and safest hands.
