The shifting ideals of attractiveness, androgyny in fashion, equality and education of gender identities is making the perceived embarrassment regarding men’s use of cosmetics to become smaller.

The stigma surrounding male grooming is falling and large brands like ASOS and Maybelline, are embracing a newer, gender inclusive approach and endorsing male ambassadors.

There is also a growing audience of men undergoing simple cosmetic procedures to enhance their features, male lip fillers being one of them.

Thin lips can affect both men and women, where men may be more apprehensive to make use of the quick cosmetic measures available to them.

Thin lips are mainly a genetic trait, but can become thinner in old age, where loss of the body’s natural lip plumping proteins, like collagen and elastin, cause the lips to recede throughout the years.

How to get fuller lips for men

If you find yourself asking, ‘how to get bigger lips?’ here are a few simple, at-home tips that can help (and no one will know):

  • Exfoliate your lips

Physically exfoliating your lips with a dry toothbrush or a lip scrub, twice a week can help to remove any dead skin cell build up. Exfoliating also stimulates the blood vessels beneath, causing them to rush to the surface and giving you a bigger lip.

  • Shave your face

Keeping your face smooth helps to draw attention to the lip area and if you want to accentuate your lips, removing distractions, like facial hair, may help to make your lips look more prominent.

  • Keep hydrated

Drinking lots of water keeps your skin hydrated and avoids your lips becoming sore, cracked and flaky. Dehydrated skin depletes natural fulness making your lips look more shrunken than usual. Six to eight glasses of water a day is recommended in order to help your lips retain water and keep them looking full.

  • Lip liner

There are many male-orientated make up products available online, or you can simply purchase the ones marketed for women – they are the same products.

Lip liner can be an easy way to create the illusion of a larger lip and subtlety is key when making the lips look bigger. Buy a lip pencil that matches your natural lip colour and very, very lightly draw just outside your natural lip shape. Use your finger to pat the colour in to ensure a solid application and subtlety.

  • Invest in a firming lip balm

A lip plumper is a kind of lip balm that can also help to temporarily enlarge the lips. It works by causing the blood to rush to the surface of the skin and usually contains mild irritant ingredients which cause transient swelling.

If you want it to look unnoticeable, avoid balms with a shiny, lip gloss finish and seek ingredients like menthol and capsicum.

All these tips can help to improve your lip area, however, they will not help to significantly change the shape or size of your lips. If thin lips are causing you distress, taking a professional approach is the most effective option.

Lip fillers for men

In some cultures, thin lips on men can symbolise meanness and a fuller lip treatment may help make you more approachable and desirable to potential partners.

There are many celebrities who endorse the use of professional treatments as a way to effectively combat the signs of ageing and appearance dissatisfaction.

Social media has also championed lip enhancement and a larger lip, where Kylie Jenner, K-pop stars, Prince, Brad Pitt, Tom Hardy and Idris Elba are admired for their larger, fuller lips.

A strong protruding lip is also a common trait among male models. The number of men seeking lip fillers to help enhance their lips is growing and ‘a less is more’ approach is mostly preferred.

Most men’s lip fillers before and after photos show natural and subtle improvements in balance, symmetry and size.

Lip filler is a type of injectable dermal filler treatment and can work to subtly alter the lip shape, add volume and create definition to both lips, the bottom lip or top. Each treatment is modified, where the amount of filler used varies depending on your desired outcome.

At sk:n, the brand of lip filler we use is called Juvéderm®  which is mainly formulated from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a popular skincare ingredient and is derived from a natural sugar substance found in the body that has natural toning and firming abilities.

Lip filler treatment has minimal side effects and produces immediate results without the downtime and expense of plastic surgery. The key benefit of lip fillers is that they are completely reversible

Therefore, if you are unhappy with your results, your nurse or doctor can immediately administer a solution which will dissolve the filler and leave no long term effect or damage.

Research suggests that men are increasingly dissatisfied with the way they look, so to improve the appearance of thin lips discreetly, lip fillers for men is the clear choice. Men should be free to correct and improve their appearance, don’t you agree?
