Frequently asked questions:
What are leg thread veins?
Also known as spider veins, broken veins or telangiectasia in the medical world, leg thread veins are tiny blood vessels under the surface of the skin that have become enlarged. They look like fine red, or sometimes purple, wiggly lines. They are not dangerous, but can become larger over time, so early treatment is advised. As a rule of thumb, if you can see leg thread veins, they are no longer needed by the body and can be removed by a medical practitioner.
What causes them?
There are several known causes, including hormonal changes in the body, inheriting a predisposition to leg thread veins, exposure to extreme temperatures, cortico-steroid medicines and radiotherapy. Women are more likely than men to develop leg thread veins and they tend to appear from the age of around 40.
What are the treatment options for leg thread veins?
There are two effective treatment options. Laser Treatment breaks down unwanted veins using brief pulses of laser light. We also offer Sclerotherapy for larger veins, which involves the injection of a medical solution into the vein that results in microscopic damage to the cells, causing the vein to close, then disperse. A combination of both treatments may be advised, depending on the nature of your leg thread veins.
Are they safe?
During your initial consultation, your practitioner will discuss your treatment plan with you, including any possible side effects and how to minimise these. The laser targets only the unwanted veins, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. You may experience some bruising or swelling after treatment, but this should subside within 72 hours. Sclerotherapy is a proven method that has been practised since the 1930s and is a safe treatment, with very few complications, when performed by a medical practitioner.
How do the treatments work?
Laser Treatment uses brief pulses of laser light to destroy small blood vessels. Light is directed at the unwanted veins, causing them to heat up extremely quickly, break down and collapse in on themselves. The process is called photothermolysis.
Sclerotherapy causes microscopic damage to the cells lining the vein. Over time the blood vessels will close, shrink and disperse - resulting in the vein fading from view.
Does treatment hurt?
Laser Treatment is described as feeling like the flick of an elastic band. With Sclerotherapy you might feel the pricking sensation of the needle, but the pain is minimal.
Is Leg Thread Vein Removal right for me?
This treatment is right for anyone wanting to say goodbye to ageing spidery veins on their legs. During your consultation, your doctor or nurse will discuss your particular veins and suitability for Laser Treatment or Sclerotherapy. Due to how the laser distinguishes colour, it may not be suitable for those with a darker skin tone.
What results will I see?
Our clients often see a visible reduction in unwanted veins by as much as 75% with one to three treatments.
How long will it last?
The results are permanent. However, if you are prone to leg thread you may need occasional maintenance treatments if new vessels appear.
