Why Is Adult Acne on the Rise?

Although more commonly associated with hormonal teenagers, acne can also afflict adults well in to their 30s and 40s.
With a 200 per cent increase in the number of adults seeking specialist acne treatment in the last year, it’s clear that adult acne is very much on the rise.
But what, exactly, causes adult acne? Here we outline just some of the reasons that could be behind your adult acne outbreak.
One of the more common causes of adult acne, a poor diet has long been associated with skin problems such as acne.
But although greasy and sugary foods can contribute to adult acne breakouts - and could exacerbate the condition if you already have it – the research to support the link between a poor diet and acne is far from definitive.
So although it’s important to eat a balanced and healthy diet to keep your general health in check, your diet is probably not the only reason for your current skin trouble.
In fact, the reason behind your adult acne breakout could very well be related to your hormone activity.
Whilst it is perfectly normal for your body to produce a wide range of hormones, any big increases in particular hormone levels can cause the oil glands in your skin to enlarge and produce an excessive amount of oil, which could result in an acne breakout.
There can be a number of reasons behind a change in your hormone level, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause, and increased stress levels.
Whilst we like to think that the air we breathe is clean, in many areas, especially large cities, this is simply not the case.
Smog, chemicals and other toxins produced by car exhausts are all present in the air we breathe, and can all clog your pores, causing your skin to breakout.
Fortunately, pollution is a problem that is easy enough to combat. You just need to make sure that you keep your face as clean as possible.
So if you live in a big city where pollution is almost completely unavoidable, make sure to wash your face no more than twice a day with a mild facial cleanser to help keep your skin as clean as possible.
