Frequently asked questions

What is laser hair removal?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal is a process which works to permanently reduce hair growth in targeted areas. Our specialists carry out the treatment, targeting unwanted hair with lasers to damage or destroy the hair follicles, which ultimately prevents regrowth.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal is described as feeling like the flick of an elastic band, or it can be a little painful for some. However, as more of the hair follicles are destroyed, the treatment will become less painful. The level of pain experienced will vary depending on the areas being targeted and your individual sensitivity. Our specialists will ensure you are comfortable and your treatment is always safe.

What results will I get with laser hair removal?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal is approved to deliver permanent hair reduction of up to 90%. You can expect to see your best results after a course of 8-12, after which the hair will have reduced dramatically and the skin is silky-smooth. Some clients, however, may need top ups depending on their hormonal changes over time.

How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need to see results?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle during its active growing cycle, known as the anagen phase, when the hair is still attached to the root.

Not all hair will be in this phase at the same time (roughly 10-20%), so having appointments at regular intervals ensures the treatment is more effective.

We recommend having at least 8 sessions per area, every 4-6 weeks, depending on the area, hair type, and thickness.

Sometimes, some clients may need more or a few less, but our practitioners will inform you how many you’ll need based on your hair type and goals. Our specialists will advise you on the number of sessions required to achieve permanent results.

How often should I have laser hair removal?

Close Icon

We generally recommend spacing sessions between 4 and 6 weeks apart, depending on the area and hair growth, but your specialist will advise on the frequency of your treatments to obtain optimum results. This is to ensure the hair follicles are targeted at the correct stage of their growth cycle.

Why do I need a course of treatment?

Close Icon

Hair grows in four phases: the anagen phase, the catagen phase, the telogen phase and the exogen phase. To prevent re-growth, the hair follicle must be targeted during the anagen phase, which is the only part of the growth cycle that the hair follicle is attached to the bulb. Individual hairs will most likely be in different parts of the hair growth cycle at any one time, that’s why a course of treatment is required. Your specialist will discuss this with you during your initial consultation, but as a guide we usually recommend around 8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart (depending on the area to be treated).

What areas do you treat with laser hair removal?

Close Icon

Our specialists carry out laser hair removal on all areas of the body and face. Wherever you have unwanted hair, we can safely treat any area with our class 4 medical lasers. From your legs to your cheeks, laser hair removal is possible. We treat all skin tones, as long as the hair is dark enough.

Which laser hair removal machines do you use?

Close Icon

At sk:n all of our lasers are class 4 medical, which is the highest standard of laser. We use Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers and a range of leading brands including Candela.

Can I have laser hair removal if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Close Icon

As patient safety is at the forefront of everything we do, we do not treat pregnant or breastfeeding women for any condition.

Can I have laser hair removal over tattooed areas?

Close Icon

No, it is not safe to get laser hair removal over a tattoo as it can potentially lead to burns, blisters or skin damage.

What skin and hair types can have laser hair removal?

Close Icon

At sk:n clinics our specialists are able to safely treat all skin types with our medical grade lasers leaving you with great results. Our lasers can be adjusted to work with any hair and skin combination, provided that there is enough pigment in the hair. Clients with brown or black hair will get the best results, but anyone with blonde, grey, red or white hair will not see good results.

Can men have laser hair removal for excessive hair growth?

Close Icon

Yes. Men can have laser hair removal for unwanted hair, or excessive hair growth caused by a condition called hypertrichosis. This can affect males and females, but is very rare. Laser hair removal works equally well across the entire body and the face. From unwanted cheek hair, to an entire back, chest or stomach, laser hair removal gives long lasting and effective results.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

Close Icon

Before laser hair removal treatment, you should ensure that the area is clean and free of make-up.

Hair should be removed by shaving using non-perfumed products 24 hours before your appointment, not on the same day; avoid waxing or plucking as these can change the hair growth cycle.

You must avoid tanning, including sunbathing, sunbeds, and fake tan, and ensure you have not had any sun exposure or a tan for at least two weeks before treatment.

Additionally, we are unable to treat clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, so please inform us beforehand.

What happens before laser hair treatment?

Close Icon

We recommend you shave 24 hours before treatment. Before your treatment at sk:n, we will thoroughly clean the area to be treated and ensure any stray or missed hairs are shaved.

What aftercare is needed after laser hair removal treatment?

Close Icon

Laser hair removal leaves the surrounding skin unharmed, however there are a few things you should do to prevent irritation and increase comfort:

  • Apply aloe vera gel for 2-3 days post treatment
  • Avoid sunlight or sun beds
  • Avoid hot baths, showers or saunas

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Close Icon

Prices vary depending on the size of the area covered and number of sessions booked. We recommend completing at least 8 sessions of treatment on an area to see permanent results. We also offer top up packages of 3, in case you need a few more treatments.

*Laser hair removal courses of 8 from £36.35 per month when you split the cost over 12 months. Click here to learn more about interest free credit at sk:n.

Can I get more information on the results for life guarantee?

Close Icon
  • Am I suitable for the laser hair removal results guarantee?

You will need a suitability assessment during your consultation to establish whether the results for life guarantee could be suitable for you.
Typically clients with thicker, darker, coarser hair, or a lot of dark hair in the area to be treated, are the most likely to be suitable. If you have had poor results with another provider and your hair is dark enough, our Results for Life package could be suitable for you. Please refer to the terms and conditions for further information, or speak to one of our specialists.
There are a few instances where Results for Life will not be suitable. Lighter hair colours – if you have blonde, white, red or grey hair on the area to be treated, as it has little to no pigment, you are unlikely to see great results. This is because there is simply not enough melanin in the hair to attract the laser. If you have fine vellus hair on the area, such as on the face, the hair is often not thick or dark enough to be treated.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding – for client safety reasons, we are unable to treat pregnant clients, but we can re-commence treatment after a 6 week postnatal check. Those with specific illnesses and conditions such as PCOS or excessive hair growth, or those on certain medications. For more information, please speak to your practitioner or refer to the terms and conditions.

  • What happens during my Results for Life consultation?

During your consultation, your practitioner will assess your suitability for treatment, including having an in depth conversation with you about your medical history, the condition of your skin, suitability of the hair for treatment as well as the benefits, and potential risks or side effects. If you are eligible and would like to book the Results for Life package, you will need to sign a contractual agreement to ensure you understand the terms, and the pre and post-treatment care to optimise and ensure results – as we ask of any laser hair removal client. Please read the terms and conditions for more info.

  • How many sessions of laser hair removal are included in Results for Life?

Laser for life includes up to a maximum of 12 sessions, plus up to 3 small area “top ups”. Depending on the client’s hair type and medical history, the length of treatment and efficacy may vary. Please read the terms and conditions for more information.
