Terms and conditions

sk:n terms and conditions January 2024

Set out below are the business terms in which sk:n provides a service to its clients.

Please ensure that you have read and fully understood our terms and conditions prior to booking a treatment at sk:n.

1. Appointments

  • All doctors, nurses and therapists at sk:n are trained and approved in accordance with the company’s treatment protocols and therefore sk:n does not guarantee continued treatment with a named nurse or therapist.
  • Prior to your appointment, we will inform you of any preparation required for your treatment. If you do not follow the guidance this may result in cancellation of your appointment, reduced treatment time, or additional fees being charged. For certain treatments, we ask that you are prepared for your treatment:
    • Face treatments: All make-up removed prior to treatment
    • Laser hair removal or laser tattoo removal: area shaved 24 hours prior to treatment and free of hair. Hair must not be waxed or plucked prior to laser hair removal.
  • sk:n will endeavour to ensure that your appointment runs on time. However, should we need to cancel your appointment at short notice, we will make every effort to contact you in advance. All treatments cancelled by sk:n will be rebooked as soon as convenient for our client.
  • If you are unable to attend your appointment, please contact us at least 48 hours prior to your appointment. Any cancellation within 48 hours of your appointment will result in our Cancellation Policy being implemented, which means you can expect to be charged.
  • If you do not attend your appointment with no attempt made to let us know, this will result in a 100% charge or forfeiting your treatment.
  • Late arrival to your appointment may result in a reduction in your treatment time, forfeiting your appointment or a charge.
  • Please see Cancellation and Payment Protection Policies for more information.

2. Deposits

To secure an appointment with sk:n, either in clinic, online or over the phone, we will require a fully refundable deposit* to be charged to your credit or debit card.

    • Appointments with a nurse or practitioner will require a £25* deposit: appointments include consultations, consultations with treatment, treatments only, reviews and patch tests. These deposits are refundable upon your attendance at that appointment.
    • Appointments with a doctor or injector will require a £50 deposit: appointments include consultations, consultations with treatment, treatments only, reviews and patch tests. Please note that for chargeable consultations with a doctor, the remainder of the consultation fee, minus the deposit, will be taken at your appointment. For free consultations for an injector, that deposit is refundable upon attending that consultation.
    • Exceptions:
      • Acne consultations with a nurse or practitioner: a £50 deposit will be charged to your debit or credit card upon booking to secure your appointment. On attending your appointment, your deposit is redeemable against treatment, skincare or doctor consultations for acne, subject to you attending that consultation.
      • Booking a treatment from a pre-paid package or course of treatment: no deposit is required, but should you fail to show or cancel within the 48 hour cancellation policy, your treatment will be forfeited.
      • Selected practitioner appointments booked online: these appointments will not require a deposit, however please be mindful of and adhere to our 48 hour cancellation policy as cancellation or rescheduling an appointment in less than 48 hours will mean that appointment cannot be given to another client who may really need it. These appointments are: laser hair removal consultations, skin analysis and assessment consultations, tattoo consultations, consultation and single mole report, microneedling consultations and Hydrafacial consultations.

All deposits are fully refundable should you need to cancel or reschedule with more than 48 hours’ notice. All deposits can be used towards payment for treatment or left on your account for future treatments. Should deposits remain unclaimed by the client following twelve months of inactivity, sk:n reserves the right to redeem the deposit. All deposits that are eligible for a refund, should they be cancelled with more than 48 hours’ notice, will be returned to the client within 48 hours.

For more information, please see the cancellation policy below.

3. Cancellation Policy

Applies to new bookings from 25th September 2023

Our cancellation policy is in place to ensure that we are able to maximise our appointment availability for all of their clients. This ensures that we are able to offer a cancelled appointment time to a client who needs it.

Should you need to cancel or reschedule, we kindly ask that you call us at least 48 hours before your appointment.

Any cancellation within 48 hours will result in your pre-paid treatment or deposit being forfeited.

The below table indicates the charges within each notice period, which applies to all pre-paid treatments from a package , or consultations, reviews, and patch tests.

8. Your right to complain

  • sk:n endeavours to treat all its clients appropriately, compassionately and fairly. If, however, you have an issue with any matter in relation to your treatment at sk:n you are entitled to lodge a complaint, either in person, by telephone or in writing. If you require assistance with making your complaint, sk:n will be pleased to help and will support you through the process.
  • The member of staff who initially receives the complaint will convey the details to the Clinic Manager or their designated deputy. Where this cannot be resolved immediately, you will receive a letter within three working days to confirm that an investigation into the matter is underway and that a response will be made as soon as possible.
  • Complaints of a non-medical nature will be handled in their entirety by the Clinic Manager and their Regional Manager.
  • If your complaint is treatment-related the matter will be discussed with the relevant practitioner and may require you to attend an additional consultation with that practitioner or an alternative member of the clinic’s medical team, including the Medical Director. The objective of this is to provide an explanation or a solution to your concerns. sk:n aims to give you a full written response within 20 working days, or where this is not possible, an explanation as to the cause of the delay.
  • Complainants who are not happy with the local resolution are referred to a member of the Senior Management team. If the complaint is service related this will normally be the Regional Director. If the complaint is of clinical nature this will be the Head of Medical Standards. The complaint will be further reviewed within 20 working days and you will be provided with a final written response. If the investigation requires further time, you will be provided with an explanation as to the cause of the delay.

Our Results for Life guarantee

At sk:n, we stand behind our ability to deliver exceptional and lasting clinical outcomes for clients. Due to our industry leading protocols and training – all overseen by our dedicated Medical Standards Team – we are happy to guarantee permanent hair reduction for life for clients who purchase and complete treatments as part of our Results for Life package. The Results for Life package includes up to a maximum of twelve (12) laser hair removal treatments, which must be completed within eighteen (18) months of signature of this Contract (see clause 8 for further detail).

Depending on the client’s hair type and medical history and status, the length of treatment and efficacy may vary.  As all clients have the potential to react to clinical treatments in a unique way, our guarantee is only valid for clients with no underlying hormonal imbalance or pre-existing condition that may reduce their ability to respond to treatment, and who is compliant with our requirements throughout the duration of their treatments. You are responsible for fully and accurately declaring all medical conditions to us at the start of your treatment and during the continuance of your treatments.

The consultation

Careful client selection is crucial to managing expectations and providing a positive client experience. At sk:n you can expect to have an in-depth consultation covering a detailed medical history (including any medication or alternative therapies), the presenting condition of the skin, suitability of the hair for treatment, benefits, risks and potential side effects before you are given an expected treatment outcome that we are willing to stand behind. Clients will be assessed for suitability, and likelihood that Results for Life will be effective. Prior to starting treatment, clients will always be given a patch test to ensure they start on the best and correct settings for their skin type.

Clients wishing to have treatment on the Results for Life package will be required to sign a contractual agreement to ensure they understand their pre and post-treatment care to optimise and secure results, and acceptance onto this pathway is to be based upon the practitioner’s initial assessment of the individual’s suitability.  As all clients have the potential to react to clinical treatments in a unique way, efficacy of our treatment is modelled on a client who has no underlying hormonal balance or pre-existing condition that has been proven to reduce their ability to respond to treatment, and who is compliant with our requirements throughout the duration of their treatments.

  • Suitability for treatment. This section sets out the conditions under which our Results for Life guarantee may become invalid.
    1. Hair colour: due to the way in which laser hair removal works, it is only effective for clients who have enough pigmentation in the hair to attract the laser beam, in order to damage or destroy the hair follicle and deliver the best results. As blonde, white, grey and red hair has little to no pigment, we do not treat clients with these hair colours (in the area to be treated) because they will not be able to get to a good clinical outcome.
    2. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: for client safety, we are unable to treat clients who are pregnant. Should you become pregnant, the guarantee will automatically become invalid because we will need to pause treatment for an indefinite period. You may however re-commence treatment whilst breastfeeding after having a 6 week post-natal check. Please note that, although treatment does not pose any health risks to mother or child during this time, the hormones may still be unbalanced and as a result, pigment changes may occur. Hormones may take approximately 3 months after stopping breast feeding to return to normal. Treatment during this time may also make the client more susceptible to bruising. You must notify us immediately if you become pregnant or begin breastfeeding.
    3. Medication: some medications affect the way the skin reacts to laser-based treatments, often causing higher levels of sensitivity to heat and light. Clients on medications classed as photo-sensitive will not be able to start (or re-commence) treatment until this medication has been ceased and cleared from their system. Additionally, some medications also impact the skin barrier and it would be detrimental to their therapeutic benefit to undertake laser-based treatments at the same time. As such, sk:n will not uphold the guarantee if a client starts taking any Accutane-based drug, photo-sensitising drug or topical/oral steroid treatment during the period of treatments, due to the requirement to pause treatment for an indefinite period.  You must notify us immediately if this applies to you.
    4. Illness: should you be diagnosed with or contract any illness or disease within the period of your treatment, resulting in a significant deviation from the planned treatment timeframe, or your ability to attend your treatment sessions, the guarantee will not be valid. sk:n will look to re-direct you onto another clinical treatment pathway, where appropriate. You must notify us immediately if this applies to you.

Such illnesses may include (but are not limited to):

  1. Cancer requiring intervention such as radiotherapy/chemotherapy,
  2. Potential skin malignancies in the area to be treated,
  • Active moderate to severe acne in the area to be treated,
  1. Any transmissible or contagious condition,
  2. Any loss in capacity to consent to treatment.
  1. Conditions that are not covered by the Results for Life guarantee
    1. Hirsutism – Excessive hair growth of dark, thick, coarse hair in an individual in a male pattern. Commonly affected areas are upper lip, chin, central chest, midline of stomach, lower back, buttocks and front of thighs. Ref: BAD. In clinical practice it has often been suggested that ‘real’ hirsutism is simply that which the woman thinks is excessive. Ref. Rook, Textbook of Dermatology
    2. Hypertrichosis – Excessive hair in a generalised and not in a gender specific pattern. Ref: BAD
  • PCOS – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The most common cause of hirsutism is PCOS 75% – Ref: BAD

  • Adherence to our clinical and laser protocols. This section sets out the protocols which you must adhere to.  Non-compliance may result in our Results for Life guarantee becoming invalid.
    1. Treatment within the correct time frames. Laser hair removal is designed to damage or destroy the hair follicles, and is only effective when applied during the correct phase of the hair growth cycle. Clients wishing to rely upon our laser hair Results for Life guarantee must ensure they adhere to the correct treatment intervals. You are responsible for ensuring that you can be available to commit to these timescales prior to commencing treatment. The optimum point in the growth cycle, and therefore the best intervals for applying laser hair removal treatments are as follows:

Grace period: While it is not as efficacious to extend the period of treatment, as a “one off” event, you may be treated on an extended cycle.  Such extended will be no longer than 2 weeks outside of the recommended cycle i.e. 4 weeks to 6 weeks on the face, 6 weeks to 8 weeks on the body. If periods between treatments are extended or shortened significantly or frequently, clients must accept that they are at risk of invalidating the Results for Life guarantee and not receiving successful treatment within the hair growth cycle. This could result in a less successful treatment outcome, or lower reduction in hair growth. The sk:n clinic team will communicate this to clients, and a separate contract will be signed confirming understanding of this requirement.

  1. Treatment to the best clinical outcome. We always recommend between 8-12 treatments to ensure you get the best clinical outcome. Throughout the period of treatment, we commit to reviewing client progress, and adjusting service delivery (within reason and at our absolute discretion) to increase the chances of a satisfactory outcome. sk:n will not continue treating an area that does not require further treatment (classified as having reached a clinical end point) because over-treatment can stimulate hair growth and provide a sub-optimal clinical outcome.
  2. The correct protocols. We use tried and tested parameters for every hair and skin type we can treat to maximise results. This includes identifying the correct wavelengths and settings for Fitzpatrick skin types 1-6 and the area being treated in a consistent manner. This also includes following our safety protocols and knowing when to discontinue treatment. Should we consider it inappropriate to continue your treatment, the reason(s) for this will be communicated to you, and documented. If this is due to a clinical end point having already been reached, or your non-compliance with pre and post-operative care, we will not refund you in lieu of sessions that have not yet been redeemed within the package. Please note that we do not offer the Results for Life guarantee on the Soprano or Diode platforms which use a different technology to achieve hair reduction.
  3. Hair type. We will not be able to treat clients with certain hair colours (see point 1). We will also not treat vellus (fine) hair as this is unlikely to be responsive to laser treatment. As such, our Results for Life guarantee does not extend to patches of vellus or non-pigmented hair in the areas being treated.
  4. Tanning and sun exposure. Having sun or sunbed exposure a minimum of two weeks prior to treatment, or having a fake tan on the skin when undertaking treatment, will result in changes to the pigment/perceived pigment within your skin. In order to safely complete treatment, a patch test may be required if we suspect sun/UV exposure, or fake tanned skin. This will result in a delay to treatment and as a result may affect our Results for Life

You are strongly discouraged from actively tanning during treatment, and should ensure you remain clinically suitable for treatment by limiting UV exposure, wearing SPF50 at all times (where possible). You must inform us at least 48 hours in advance of attending a clinic for treatment if you suspect a change in your pigmentation levels.

  1. Pre and post care advice. We strongly recommend that you adhere to the pre and post-treatment aftercare we advise, to help keep you safe from associated risks, including hypersensitivity to the sun, which can impact treatment length or impair the skin. Should we be made aware (or have reason to believe) that you are failing to adhere to these protocols consistently, the Results for Life guarantee will automatically become invalid and we may require you to cease treatment immediately, as a safety precaution.
  2. Hair removal methods between treatments. You agree not to use any other hair removal methods (except for shaving) in between treatment, including but not limited to waxing, creams, electrolysis, IPL and other at home hair removal devices. This is because:
    1. When hair is plucked/waxed/tweezed, the follicle is removed along with the hair. This means the hair takes longer to grow back, and could result in the follicle being insufficiently grown in time for the next laser treatment cycle, preventing the laser from being able to capture and destroy the root when applied.
    2. In order to get the best outcome from each laser hair removal session, in between treatments you should only shave, trim or cut the hair as close to the skin as possible. This way, the hair follicles remain intact and will be ready for the laser to destroy them if they are in the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle.

  • No changes to client medical history. As above, the success of our laser hair removal is based on a client remaining clinically stable throughout treatment. Changes to your medical status, including but not limited to hormonal changes during and following pregnancy or menopause, or changes to medication or medical status that can impact either the results of treatment or client safety, such as Roaccutane or steroids, will result in you being moved to a more appropriate treatment to ensure a safe and efficacious outcome. In certain circumstances, we reserve the right to stop treatment altogether. As such, significant changes to medical status or clinical suitability will result in the Results for Life guarantee becoming invalid.

  • Client tolerance of laser settings. sk:n commits to ensuring that all clients are given the best opportunity and support to remain comfortable during treatments and will work with clients to cool the skin throughout, providing breaks if necessary. We understand that energy settings may need to be temporarily adjusted to take account of different pain thresholds, however clients must be aware that repeatedly treating on lower settings is likely to extend the length of treatment or not deliver the best clinical outcome – this will result in the Results for Life guarantee becoming invalid.

  • Fulfilment of contract by sk:n. Treatments will be offered by sk:n in line with best practice guidelines for treatment intervals, as above. This does not guarantee treatment with the same practitioner, and is not limited to one clinic – albeit we will use all reasonable endeavours to provide your treatments at your clinic of choice, and will only change the clinic location in exceptional circumstances. sk:n reserves the right to offer treatments at an alternative clinic location should this not be able to be fulfilled by the usual “home” clinic due to breakdown or other business interruption. You agree to travel a reasonable distance to ensure treatment can take place within the recommended timescales, where required and notified to you by sk:n.

  • Invalid guarantee. Where we (in our absolute discretion) deem our Results for Life guarantee to be invalid, we will immediately discontinue treatment. Partial or full refunds of Results for Life packages will be assessed by sk:n on a case-by-case basis.

  • Treatment timeframe. You must complete all twelve (12) treatments within eighteen (18) months of the date of your signature of this Contract.  Where you do not complete all twelve (12) treatments within such eighteen (18) month period you will not be entitled to a full refund for the cost of the remaining sessions which have not been taken unless we (in our absolute discretion) decide otherwise.
