What is Hyperpigmentation?

The phrase hyperpigmentation is often thrown around in the world of skincare, but what exactly does it mean? In more everyday lingo the term hyperpigmentation basically means brown irregular patches on the skin that contribute to an uneven skin tone.

How does it happen?

Whether it’s hormones, pregnancy and birth control pills or too much sun exposure hyperpigmentation is fairly easy to develop. However, it tends to occur more in those with more melanin in their skin, so generally people with darker skin. Strangely enough people with very pale skin and less melanin actually have a common form of hyperpigmentation in the form of freckles.

Is it Serious?

No, it doesn’t pose any serious threats to your health but it can be linked to some diseases such as celiac disease so it’s worth seeing a dermatologist or a doctor for some expert advice. Usually, it’s more for aesthetic reasons that people seek skin treatments to try and remove hyperpigmentation.

Treatment Options

If you’re experiencing skin discolouring and think you might be suffering from hyperpigmentation then don’t worry. Here at sk:n we have treatments designed to achieve beautiful healthy skin. Our skin peels are designed to exfoliate away old skin and make way for fresh cells to develop. If skin peels sound a little daunting to you, we also recommend microdermabrasion, which similarly to the peels, exfoliates away dead skin and helps promote the healthy layers of skin underneath. For more information on how we can help you here at sk:n just pick up the phone and arrange a consultation, we’ll get right back to you!
