Suffering from PCOS – Laser Hair Removal is here!

By Raj Phull 14th March 2012 Category: Advice

While it’s by no means the biggest medical issue, one of the most visible effects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is excessive and unwanted body hair. Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to treat this side effect, so is at least worth considering.

Laser hair removal treatments can often be confused with other techniques such as intense pulse light (IPL). The big difference is that laser hair removal uses a specific light wave that is more efficient: compared to IPL, more of the energy goes to neutralising the base hair follicles and less winds up doing nothing useful but causing discomfort.

Patients with PCOS may find laser hair removal more flexible as well. That’s because it is more suited to larger areas of skin such as backs or legs where a single IPL session would be a technical struggle (not to mention potentially painful.)

The flexibility continues with the issue laser hair removal cost. Many leading clinics offer variable pricing where the cost depends on the areas treated. This can make it more financially viable for PCOS sufferers who have excessive hair only in specific locations. It is important to note that the way laser hair removal works means that it can take around half a dozen treatments to get the best effect. Because of this, many clinics will offer multi-treatment discounts to make it more affordable.

The confidence benefits from laser hair removal for women with PCOS are more of a long-term affair. It may feel like a big deal to undergo a course of laser treatment compared with methods such as waxing or shaving. However, laser hair removal’s effects are far longer lasting, meaning that excess hair stops feeling like an ongoing problem.

The results can be varied, and generally women with darker hair and lighter skin will benefit more. That said, a good clinic will be happy to talk over the treatment with you and help you decide if it is worthwhile.
