Skincare knowhow for every age
It’s important to find the right skincare products for your skin type, but you’ll notice your skin also has differing needs as you age. With products for all age groups (and skin types) at the The Skin Experts, they have everything you need for beautiful skin, whatever your age.
Your 20s: Preventing sun exposure
To all those 20-somethings posting smug sun-lounger selfies of bronzed skin on Instagram, know this: your fresh-faced days are numbered. In fact, most of the sun damage that makes itself visible in your 40s, 50s and 60s is believed to have been created by the time we reach our 20s. That’s why sunscreen is your most important skincare product: not only will it protect you from the immediate effects of sun damage, (i.e., sore, red, sunburnt skin and the resulting blistering and dryness) it will also help prevent any further damage (read: ageing) to your skin further down the line. If you’re put off by the sticky, greasy stuff your mom used to slather you with as a kid, don’t be. There are loads of lightweight but super-effective sunscreens on the market today and some are even designed to be worn under makeup like a normal moisturiser or primer.
Our favourite:
Heliocare® Advanced XF Gel SPF50 £ 28.00: We love this product. It dries quickly after application to leave skin feeling hydrated, silky and soft.
Your 30s: Hydration maintenance
There’s something about turning 30 that feels like a real milestone, especially when it comes to your skin. But it’s not just paranoia that has us reaching for the wrinkle cream. It’s usually as we enter our third decade that we begin to see the first few signs of sun damage appear as fine lines, the odd wrinkle and the occasional dark spot. As mentioned above, most of the sun damage to your skin has already been clocked up by now, so your 30s are about damage control and healthy skin maintenance. As a rule, your skin tends to be dryer once you get into your 30s, which for anyone who battled acne-prone skin in their teens and 20s will come as a welcome relief. But it’s worth noting that the reduction in natural oils can cause your skin to lose its youthful lustre, so hydration is now more important than ever before. It’s time to start introducing skincare products that work a little harder and contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid which hold onto water, plumping out the skin to maintain that dewy glow.
Our favourite:
SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel 30ml, £64.50: Leaves skin feeling supple and smooth and maximises the benefits of your moisturiser.
Your 40s and beyond: Undoing the damage
Up until now, your skincare regime was all about prevention and maintenance, but now it’s about turning back the clock. This means finding ingredients that actively kickstart your skin’s production of collagen and elastin – the proteins that give your skin its firmness and elasticity. As we age, these substances naturally begin to deplete, but fear not: there are plenty of products designed to reverse this side-effect. If you haven’t already introduced a serum to your routine, now’s the time. Look for peptides (the building blocks that make up collagen and elastin), retinol (a vitamin A derivative that can reverse the signs of ageing including wrinkles and pigmentation) and hyaluronic acid, for its moisture-holding properties. In your 40s, you might also be seeing the effects of hormonal changes and hot flushes, so you may benefit from products designed for oilier skin types to help counteract this.
