While laser hair removal is generally safe there are a number of side effects that can occur during or following the procedure. These side effects usually depend on the client’s skin type and a pre-procedure consultation with a technician will enable them to highlight the particular risks associated with your skin type. Anyone considering laser hair removal should gather as much information as possible before deciding whether or not to go ahead with the treatment.

Laser hair removal is carried out by applying an invisible light beam to the skin to remove hair follicles at their roots. Because of the heat generated by the laser mild discomfort and discoloration can occur. The most common side effect is a slight reddening or swelling of the treated skin area. However, cooling gels, sprays or topical anaesthetic creams usually calm the irritation down on the day of the treatment.

However, people with darker skin tones are more susceptible to longer lasting and more serious side effects. Some have experienced a change in pigmentation in the treated skin area. While rarely permanent, the discoloration has been known to last for several months, so it is important darker skinned people seek advice from a technician before undergoing treatment.

Darker skinned people are also more likely to develop blisters, burns and scabs from laser hair removal treatment. Such side effects depend on the person’s particular skin type and ability to heal. Those with darker and more sensitive skin will also be more likely to develop scarring from burns, scabs and blisters.

The best way to avoid any side effects is to check with a technician that you have suitable skin for laser hair removal before having it done.
