Concerned about chicken skin?

By Raj Phull 31st May 2013 Category: Advice

Have you got dry spots on your skin that feel like sandpaper? Are some of them red and raised? Are they mostly on the back of your legs, and arms? It sounds like you may be suffering from keratosis pilaris, which is known in its more common sense as chicken skin.

So How Does it Develop?

This is a genetic condition often seen in those with celiac disease. It isn’t curable, but can be treated and the symptoms significantly eased. The skin condition is thought to be caused by dead skin clogging up your hair follicles and pores. Exfoliating treatments can help to reduce the appearance and the rough feel of the condition. Aside from looking and feeling horrible, it’s not a serious condition and the worst it can do is leave you feeling self conscious, but we can help!

So What Next?

If you think you might be prone to this skin condition then there are a number of things you can do to try and ease the symptoms. At home, you can incorporate exfoliation into your daily routine, followed up by the application of lots of moisturiser.

Rule the Roost with Microdermabrasion

However, these home treatments are only likely to soften the skin for a very limited amount of time and will need to be repeated daily. If you’re looking for a long-term solution then you should have a consultation with one of our expert dermatologists at sk:n. They’ll be able to assess your skin and offer treatments. If it is Keratosis Pilaris they will recommend you try microdermabrasion which works by blasting your skin with tiny micro crystals that remove the top layer of ‘dead’ skin.
