Are you thinking about enhancing your appearance by getting facial dermal fillers, like lip fillers, cheek fillers or tear trough fillers but are concerned about not liking the results?

Or have you already had fillers, find yourself unhappy with the way they look and are wondering if there’s anything that can be done about it?

In this blog, we discuss dissolving lip filler and facial fillers, how it’s done, and what you should expect when you do it. It helps to know what dermal fillers are so that you can understand how they can be removed. Read on to find out the facts.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic procedures used to enhance facial features and plump and fill lines, grooves or sunken areas. At sk:n we only use high-quality products and use Juvederm. Administered correctly by a medical professional, dermal fillers can subtly smooth, soften, contour and tone the skin; restore youthful plumpness and enhance and define your features.

Dermal fillers are usually made from hyaluronic acid, a biodegradable gel that is injected into the face with a fine needle.

The filler is made from a type of hyaluronic acid, closely matching the clear sugar, a highly hydrophilic substance (meaning it readily absorbs moisture) that is naturally produced by the body. Hyaluronic acid is mostly found in the skin, connective tissue and eyes, with its purpose being to keep tissues hydrated and lubricated. A hyaluronic acid molecule can store 1000 times its weight of water, making it the perfect plumping and moisturising agent.

After being injected under the skin, the filler begins to integrate with the facial tissue, attracting and binding with water molecules, rehydrating the area.

Lip and facial fillers are not permanent, they will dissolve, simply broken down by the body over time, taking from 9 to 24 months. This is due to an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which reacts with the hyaluronic acid.

If you have had lip fillers administered by a poorly trained practitioner, or your fillers look plumper or less natural than you expected, this will no doubt be too long to wait. Thankfully, there is a professional treatment that will dissolve fillers.

How Can Dermal Fillers Be Dissolved?

To dissolve fillers, a qualified and experienced practitioner can use the enzyme hyaluronidase to speed up the natural process of breaking down the injected hyaluronic acid and melting it away.

The hyaluronidase can be injected into the area with the unwanted filler and the treatment should be quick and simple. Often fillers dissolve quickly when the enzyme is applied, and the outcome can be observed in a matter of minutes, although it usually takes 12 to 24 hours to dissolve enough filler to achieve the complete correction.

Hyaluronidase does work very quickly but it can have side effects including:

  • A minimal and temporary effect on the hyaluronic acid in the body, which will regrow following the treatment.
  • A return to the normal features that you were wanting to change with fillers.
  • Swelling or discomfort in the area the enzyme was injected, which may last for 2 to 3 days after having the procedure.
  • The possibility of an immediate allergic reaction to the injection, which can lead to a more serious reaction if not detected and treated quickly by the practitioner administering the treatment.

The process may be a little painful, especially in the lips which are sensitive and full of nerve endings, but an anaesthetic or numbing cream is usually applied first to help with this.

It’s imperative to have fillers, dissolved by a highly qualified and experienced medical doctor with a prescription. Letting any other type of practitioner attempt to administer the hyaluronidase risks infection and injury.

When Can I Have Fillers Reapplied?

Fillers should not be reapplied for at least 2 to 6 weeks unless there are extenuating circumstances.

After having hyaluronidase injected, the enzyme stays in the body for a while, making it very difficult to judge how much or where more hyaluronic acid should be used.

Re-injection must be only ever done by experienced practitioners, who are experts in facial anatomy and can assess the area. They will need to know the type and quality of filler used and can then advise the client accordingly.
