sk:n welcomes the Government’s Response to the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions

17th February 2014

No other chain of dermatology services is more regulated than sk:n, the nation's skin clinic

sk:n welcomes the recommendations outlined in the Government's Response to the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions, including the move to make dermal fillers prescription only medical devices, and believes that tighter regulation of the industry is a move in the right direction. However, sk:n are disappointed that the Department of Health has not gone further to adequately protect patients against 'cosmetic cowboys'. Sk:n hoped that the Government would have taken the sensible decision to increase control and regulation on lasers to protect patients from the growing number of poor quality operators. As founding members of Treatments You Can Trust (TYCT), the sole, and currently voluntary register of safe providers of Botox® and dermal fillers, sk:n continues to fully support the view for a compulsory register of safe providers.

sk:n not only adheres to all existing legal safety guidelines but exceeds them through self-regulation, and fully supports the newly proposed measures for increased patient safety in the cosmetic industry. Each sk:n clinic has a Medical Director to manage medical standards, which means we are equipped to manage the change of fillers to prescription only medical devices. sk:n prides itself on the fact only highly trained medical experts such as doctors and fully qualified nurses administer fillers, after an in-depth consultation, using only the highest grade consumables on the market (eg Juvéderm).

At sk:n, dermal fillers are administered in high quality Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered premises, with many rooms equipped to the equivalent of hospital minor-surgery theatres. All patients are provided with full details of a treatment and all potential outcomes. Patients are required to sign a consent form and given a cooling off period, which is fully recorded. Any adverse events are equally reported and investigated by the in-house Medical Director to ensure the highest level of patient safety.

In the absence of a mandatory register sk:n remain committed to working with TCYT on a voluntary basis but are concerned that many other providers can too easily opt not to do this, thus leaving patients open to risk as they will have no guarantee to the level of qualification of the practitioners. We believe any person who wishes to perform these procedures should not only have the appropriate accredited qualifications, but believe that this needs to be formally mandated.

Despite Dr Dan Poulter, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health, identifying that anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and laser hair removal constitutes 90 per cent of cosmetic interventions and are worth 75 per cent of the market, not enough has been done to regulate non-surgical procedures. sk:n believes that Botox® requires further regulation to ensure it is only administered by fully qualified medical practitioners.

sk:n prides itself on using the most advanced lasers on the market and training its clinicians for the longest in the industry. Sadly many other providers do not hold themselves to the same high standard as sk:n and by ‘cutting corners' they expose patients to unacceptable risks of burning, scarring and severe reactions. sk:n look forward to continuing to consult with the government as members of TYCT for a fully regulated industry.
