A PCOS Story

A client at our clinic in Birmingham, came to see us when excess facial hair, a symptom of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), was really getting her down.  Check out the Q&A with the client to hear about her journey to smoother skin.

What were your main concerns with regards to excess hair, did it affect your confidence?
Having excess facial hair made me feel very low, I had a real lack of confidence and extremely low self-esteem. It affected the way I approached people as I feared they would judge me. I used to have to leave my hair down constantly to cover my sideburns and lower half of my face, I could never try new hair styles. I avoided going out if it wasn’t completely necessary, which in turn would make me feel even lower, it was like a vicious cycle.

What other treatments did you try before laser hair removal?
I tried a number of hair removal treatments such as waxing, threading and IPL laser.

What were your expectations of laser hair removal? How did you feel leading up to treatment?
I was told at the start of my treatment that as I suffer with PCOS it is not guaranteed that I will be 'hair-free', but I would see a difference in the amount and thickness of facial hair. I was also told that as I took a course of 8 treatments to start with I might need a top up course afterwards as the hair would grow back but finer. Everything was explained clearly and I felt confident with my Practitioner and I was really excited to start my new journey.

Could you describe what happens during treatment?
During consultation you are advised to only shave the area that will be treated 24 – 48 hours prior to the laser session. This is a huge benefit of laser hair removal compared to waxing, whereby if you shave it effects how beneficial the results will be.

During each laser hair removal treatment session the Practitioner marks the area that is being treated to create a grid. The head of the laser then begins moving over each gridded area to ensure each follicle is targeted. The laser itself feels like short sharp pin pricks, it’s uncomfortable but completely manageable. The jawline was the area that felt most sensitive, I often took my usual pain relief prior to the treatment, which seemed to help. After the treatment heat bumps can sometimes appear but aloe-vera gel is applied to help cool the area down.

What made you choose sk:n for laser hair treatment?
A friend recommended sk:n after she had been for a consultation and started treatment. I then searched for my local sk:n clinic and booked in for an appointment, I haven’t looked back since.

Would you recommend sk:n to others? Did you receive a good service at sk:n?
Yes, I would definitely recommend sk:n to others. To this day the service I have received has been exceptional. My Practitioner is excellent; knowledgeable, understanding and caring. She has helped me to become a more confident person as a direct result of having this treatment.

What message would you give to other PCOS sufferers who are considering laser hair removal?
If you suffer from excess hair and you are feeling down, low in confidence and your self-esteem is at rock bottom as a result of this, don’t lose hope. I strongly advise that you invest in a course of laser hair removal at sk:n, it really is the most effective form of hair removal. You won’t be disappointed and it is money well spent with no regrets. Now I have a new found confidence and I can live my life to the fullest.
