Let's talk PCOS awareness

6th October 2015  :

Despite it being one of the most common hormonal, reproductive and metabolic disorders found in women, many of us haven’t been educated on polycystic ovary syndrome. PCOS is caused by a hormone imbalance that restricts ovulation, making it the most common cause of female infertility. So what are the symptoms of PCOS? And how can we improve them?

What are the signs I have PCOS?

PCOS affects each woman differently and should be diagnosed by your GP. However if you do have PCOS you are likely to have some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Weight gain
  • Excessive hair growth (typically on the face, chest or abdomen)
  • Oily Skin
  • Acne
  • Irregular or no periods
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Thinning hair or hair loss on head

Whilst the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, it is thought that it's associated with abnormal hormone levels in the body, including high levels of insulin. It's also often a hereditary condition, so it's important to check if any close female relatives have had it.  A low GI diet can help control symptoms and moderate insulin levels.
Here at sk:n we treat thousands of PCOS sufferers each year, and understand how you may be feeling. Some women are trying to cope with fertility problems, others feel unfeminine due to their symptoms, many simply baffled and upset.

Treatment for PCOS

Whilst there is no cure for PCOS, there are a number of treatments available to alleviate and control the symptoms, which will help boost your self-confidence and make living with PCOS much easier. You may have found that your doctor is concerned with treating any fertility or health problems associated with the condition, but not the aesthetic drawbacks which can often be debilitating.

Laser Hair Removal is extremely effective at getting rid of unwanted hair. It is fast, no more painful than a wax and is suitable for almost any part of the body. Our lasers are gold standard, and you can expect to see a permanent reduction in hair growth in the affected area. For PCOS sufferers, a course of maintenance treatments may also be necessary to preserve results.

We also offer a range of acne treatments, to help with the spots and outbreaks that PCOS can cause in some sufferers. This includes advanced skin peels and our laser Isolaz treatment as well as a range of Anti-Blemish products.
