Salicylic acid - the secret ingredient for acne prone sk:n
As this week's pictures of Beyoncé confirm, acne can affect people of any age. Although most acne sufferers are typically 16 to 24, many men and women struggle with what can be a life-long condition, or find themselves battling the blemishes again in their thirties and forties after a decade or so of clear skin...
There are now many clinical papers written on Adult Acne with skin texture, sporadic or persistent breakouts and reddening under the spotlight. Laser are playing a greater part in the treatment of acne-scarring, but before that can begin, the acne itself must be cleared.
One active which you will find in almost all acne treatments, is the near miraculous salicylic acid.
What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid actually comes from the Latin salix, meaning, ‘willow tree’ the bark of which used to be the source of the active. It is a colourless, crystalline substance with exceptional anti-inflammatory properties which is also used in the production of aspirin. (For that reason, if you have an aspirin allergy, you need to alert your practitioner). It can also be found in many fruits, such as blackberries, blueberries, dates, grapes, kiwi fruits and apricots which may give your skin a boost for additional reasons to also being loaded with anti-oxidants..
What does salicylic acid (SA) do?
On the skin, salicylic acid helps to correct the abnormal shedding of cells. For milder acne, salicylic acid helps unclog pores to resolve and prevent lesions. It must be used continuously, because its effects stop when you stop using it - pores clog up again and the acne returns.
In short then, SA works by breaking up the cells that stick together to block blackheads and whiteheads, banishing blemishes and promoting clearer skin.
Being an anti-inflammatory, it also soothes stressed out skin, reducing redness and calming breakouts and angry complexions.
Salicylic acid also has the ability to chemically exfoliate deep within your pores as well as resurfacing an uneven texture.
Clinical studies have shown that subjects using the salicylic acid-peptide combination experienced a decrease in spot counts by over 20%.
A course of Salicylic Peels is especially recommended to treat acne. The peel will exfoliate the skin, encouraging the removal of dead cells, dirt and sebum from the pores. Treatments can take place every 10-14 days to then be incorporated into a treatment plan using topical products for acne prone skin.
