Papaya in its raw form has been used for centuries as a natural way to treat acne. So can it really put the annoyances of your skin problems to rest? While its effectiveness is debatable, the treatment has proven successful for a wide number of users after just a few applications.

A key cause of acne is the overproduction of oil in the skin. Sebum is naturally produced to keep skin hydrated, however excessive amounts can block cells and trap dead skin cells in pores. This gradually forms pimples and irritates the skin.

The enzymes, vitamins and lycopene found in papaya can help battle blemishes. The enzymes found in the fruit including papain and chymopapain possess antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Papain is a protein-disolving enzyme that breaks down and removes damaged keratin proteins on the skin without harming healthy tissues. The exfoliating enzyme acts as an agent in unclogging pores by dissolving dry and dead skin cells. What's more is that it boosts the production of new, healthy cells and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent to keep skin smooth.

The vitamins A, B and C found in papaya also help blot out blemishes. Antioxidant vitamin A reduces inflammation and soothing swollen, sore and red spots. The vitamin also helps maintain skin as it strips pores of dead skin cells which accumulate to cause breakouts. Beta- carotene, a type of vitamin A also promotes healthy skin. The vitamins B and C decrease acne-antagonized inflammation and reduces the skin's oil production by trapping moisture in the skin.
