What happened when one beauty blogger revealed her make-up free face to the world? A lot of vitriol, hate, and a frank discussion about beauty.

Unrealistic standards

Em Ford is a beauty blogger who lives in London. She shares How-To's about make-up and beauty tips on her YouTube channel My Pale Skin, as well as on her blog of the same name. But recently she said she had been getting a lot of messages from people all over the world suffering with acne, insecurity or self-confidence issues. So she set out to create a film that revealed how social media sets unrealistic beauty expectations. She said we're so used to seeing false images of perfection that it's hard to remember that we are beautiful.

Over the course of three months, Em began to post images of herself - without makeup - on social media, and documented the comments that were left. There were over a thousand comments left, but not all of them were positive. They ranged from "I can't even look at her" to "you look disgusting".

However, as she starts putting more makeup on, the tone of the comments changes to more positive ones. Commentators wrote “you look beautiful” and “you're so perfect”. But some aggressive comments are still added; claiming that “this is false advertising” and “you wear too much makeup”.

The video

Em then compiled all this into a moving video, where she applies makeup and overlays the comments that were left on her photos on social media at the various stages. She says she wanted to create the film to remind people that ‘no matter how flawed you feel, no matter how upset you may feel about the way you look or how hard you find it to make friends, or be confident. Believe in yourself, and never let anyone tell you you're not beautiful - not even yourself.’

If you are struggling with acne, there are a number of treatments we can offer for you. We can also offer free consultations with one of our dermatologists - to work out what's the right course of action for your skin.
