Foods to fight against acne

24th January 2015

Having spots can be very frustrating when having your graduation photo, a job interview or even going on a romantic date. You might have tried different remedies to cure your acne but yet been unsuccessful. The reason behind this could be related to your diet. We have therefore come up with a list of several foods that can help in giving you splendid and glowing skin again.

Blueberries not only have a great taste, they are also healthy for your skin. It has been suggested that blueberries are a great remedy for acne with their antioxidant properties. Additionally, blueberries contain pectin, which helps in washing away the toxins that originate in the production of acne flare-ups.

You may have heard how carrots are great for your eyesight but they are also very good in treating your acne. Rich in vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, carrots fight acne before pimples start to appear and help recover from acne breakouts.

Many green foods are a great remedy to acne. But have you ever tried spinach in your diet? Spinach is a great ingredient with chlorophyll to cleanse bacteria and toxins in your blood stream and digestive tract. Furthermore, spinach has vitamin A that automatically acts as an anti-acne agent.

Salmon, rich in omega 3 fats and protein, increases the production of collagen in your skin and also helps against inflammation. Consequently, eating salmon on a regular basis can significantly improve the tone of your skin.

Low in iodine and with a high source of zinc, oats are very good for reducing inflammation and killing bacteria present in your acne. It is suggested that untreated oats contains phytic acid which blocks the penetration of zinc into your intestines to detrimental effect. Therefore, we strongly recommend carefully choosing oats and soaking them first in order to loosen the enzymes and counteract the phytic acid.

Oranges are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which help to combat pimples, acne and blackheads. Eating oranges will therefore help you to rejuvenate your skin and keep it clear of blemishes. However, make sure you do not eat too many of them otherwise some unfortunate symptoms such as diarrhoea and insomnia could consequently arise.

Keeping a good diet will help improve your acne but whether you are allergic or depending on your type of skin, we highly recommend meeting one of our dermatologists at one of our Sk:n clinics to receive the best treatment for you.
