Itchy skin - the causes and solutions

6th September 2014

You’re skin is likely to become itchy and irritable, when it’s covered with pimples or if you’re having any other skin issues. What exactly causes the itching in the first place? Skin experts have pointed out that when nerves, also known as C fibers are stimulated will lead to itching of the skin.

Below is a list of what triggers itching in the first place and techniques you can adopt to keep your itching at a minimal.

1. Dry skin

Dry skin, which is commonly linked with skin conditions like eczema is one of the key reasons why we have itchy skin. Apparently the skin cells are said to separate and dry out, leaving the body feeling itchy.

Solution for dry skin - try to moisturise your skin everyday

Use a good quality moisturiser every day and factor it into your skin-care routine. It may also be a good idea for you to apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp after showering as this will help keep the moisturiser in and stop it from turning dry and flaky.

2. Sunburn

If you have had to deal with sunburn before, you will know the importance of sun protection and how sun-damaged skin can be very red, itchy and peel.

Solution for sunburn - apply cold compressions to your skin

It is advisable for you to place cold, wet compressions to your skin as this will allow your skin to cool down and will no doubt help relieve your sunburn at a faster pace.

All you will be required to do is, dampen a clean cloth with cold water, and place it over the affected areas for 20 to 30 minutes. Feel free to repeat this procedure as many times as you like until you begin to see positive results.

3. Acne-prone skin

Regardless of your age, acne can be something that can stay with you long into adulthood. Past research has shown that adult acne is just as popular as teenage acne. Therefore, it's recommended for this skin condition to be treated immediately if it's beginning to affect your confidence and self-esteem.

Solution for acne-prone skin

As mentioned above, if your acne-prone skin is becoming a concern to you then it would be worth speaking to a professional dermatologist to find out what your next steps should be. Imagine the extra confidence you'd have if you could be free of acne forever. Our acne treatment experts are on hand to deliver the smooth skin you've always wanted.
