Can high blood sugar lead to more wrinkles?

Growing old is a concern for a lot of people and whilst it's not something we can really control, we can try and find ways to slow down the process. An important factor in this anti-ageing battle is diet, and you may not be aware but certain foods can actually speed up the formation of wrinkles.
Indeed, what you eat not only has effects on your body shape but also on your skin. Sugar is a significant problem, accelerating the formation of wrinkles and loss of elasticity in the skin.
Control Your Sweet Tooth
Some drinks and foods you might be indulging in may contain sugar without you even knowing about. Often ready meals and processed or packaged foods such as salad dressings, pizzas, or even foods with carbohydrates like white bread and rice contain high levels of sugar.
Furthermore, the way you are cooking your food can also have an effect. For example, frying encourages higher advanced glycation. Glycation is a natural process whereby the sugar in your bloodstream is used by the body to form collagen fibres. However, with high blood sugar, the process is a lot quicker and results in stiffness and a decline in your skin's elasticity.
Precautions to take
There isn't a quick overnight solution to reversing the apparition of wrinkles but you can try to prevent them by changing your diet. Trying to eat more vegetables, fruits and herbs; even spices can inhibit glycation. Finally drinking more green tea could also help to stop glycation.
Nevertheless, it's important to remember that altering your diet will have varying effects for different people. Therefore, visiting your GP as well as consulting with a dermatologist is probably the best answer if you are worried or concerned about the occurrence of wrinkles.
