Manuka Honey: Acne Treatment?
18 Mar 2014
Honey is often used as treatments to a variety of ailments, including but not limited to colds, burns and wounds. The new "miracle" cure for acne, according to the internet is manuka honey. People argue that manuka honey has the ability to not only reduce the size of cystic bumps but also acne scars when applied topically.
What is it?
The manuka tree can be found in New Zealand and Australia, where honeybees collect the honey. This honey is special due to the fact it has more anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties than other types of honey. More than 80 species of bacteria are reported to be inhibited by manuka honey.
Does it really work?
If you're looking for a quick solution to the odd spot then manuka honey can help reduce swelling and redness, but if you suffer from severe acne, you may need a more permanent solution.
If you do want a longer-term solution, it's worth looking into specialised treatments that have been developed to target acne-prone skin, like laser treatment.
Although there are numerous home remedies available to try, there are procedures available at clinics that specialise in acne treatment. Laser treatment is one option that you could choose that would give you more predictable results, when performed by a trained clinician. Make sure you discuss the options with a dermatologist to find what's best for you.
