What is 'werewolf syndrome'?

4th January 2014

'Werewolf syndrome' is medically known as congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa, a very rare condition that causes abnormal hair growth on the body. It's passed on from a parent and can be present from birth with thick hair on their face and other areas of the body.

It can have an extremely distressing effect on the lives of sufferers, some unable to leave their homes for fear of how the public will treat them.

The Budhathoki family

Devi Budhathoki lives in Nepal and along with her three children suffers from congenital hypetrichosis lanuginose which has made life extremely difficult for them. Although they try to live normal lives, when out in public they are constantly reminded of their condition by being teased and mocked.

The entire family were offered laser hair removal by a hospital in Kathmandu. Although being happy for herself, Devi was mostly focused on the result it would have on her childrens' lives. The children were incredibly excited about getting the procedure done, and had no concerns over any possible side effects that could arise. More than anything they just wanted to enjoy their childhood and live like any other child.

Although this is a very rare condition, many women still suffer from excess facial and body hair, which can be emotionally distressing. It's important to consult a dermatologist or qualified physician when exploring treatment options if you do suffer from unwanted hair.
