Top five skincare secrets from dermatologists

25th September 2012

Dermatology is practised by a dermatologist who specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of skin diseases as well as your nails and hair. There is so much advice available on the internet these days to do with the rejuvenation of your skin and the skin treatments available.

Below are the top 5 skin care secrets dermatologists like to keep for the treatment room:

. Wash your face at night

Many people just wash their face in the morning but what about the build up of bacteria and dirt that occur throughout the day? Do you really want that to remain on your face whilst you spend eight hours asleep?

So, wash your face gently before going to bed to remove the top level of dirt. After washing, your face may feel a little tight for 10 minutes or so. Another benefit is that anti ageing creams should be able to penetrate deeper into your skin to help achieve better results.

As the production of oil reduces in your 40's you should splash your skin with lukewarm water to avoid your complexion drying out.

2. Consume a diet that is rich in antioxidants

Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, as they are full of antioxidants. It is well known that antioxidants combat harmful free radicals that are not good for the health of your skin.

3. Manage stress

Anxiety increases cortisol that is a stress hormone that, in turn, causes inflammation resulting in the breaking down of collagen with acne and redness of the face being brought on. By managing your stress levels will help with your complexion.

4. Wrinkle Cream

Just use one wrinkle cream on your skin as overloading with several makes your skin dry and irritated. Follow the instructions on the packaging and do not be tempted to put too much cream on.

5. Store skin care products in the fridge

Expensive skin care products will deteriorate quicker if let in a steamy bathroom and, therefore, will not be as effective. Keep them in your fridge to extend their "lifespan".
