Effective treatment for 'backne'

26th October 2012  :

A common skin condition, acne is caused when follicles and pores in the skin are blocked. This is often the result of changes to hormone levels during puberty. These changes can trigger the over-production of sebum; an oily, waxy substance produced by sebaceous glands in the skin. Sebum blocks the hair follicles and causes painful spots, pustules and redness known as acne.

Commonly occurring on the face, back, arms and chest, 80% of teenagers are afflicted with acne to some degree between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. However, while a majority of sufferers are affected during puberty, adults can also suffer from acne. While acne is a cosmetic issue, it can also severely affect the sufferer's self-esteem, which in turn can lead to insecurity, social anxiety and even depression. For this reason, early treatment of acne is encouraged.

While over-the-counter treatments are available for light cases of acne, back acne can be tougher to treat. The skin on the back is thicker and tougher, with thousands of oil-producing glands in this area. There are several skin treatments available, designed to combat the causes of acne and help sufferers regain smooth, clear skin.

Laser skin treatments such as Isolaz use high-tech lasers to effectively purify pores, removing the blockages and reducing the causes of acne. Using a suction device, the skin specialists remove oil, dirt, bacteria and debris, before using a specially designed laser to emit a pulse of light that kills any remaining bacteria in the pores, freeing the skin from infection. Painless and safe, this process is often combined with skin peels or microdermabrasion, and followed up with home-care products such as glycolic acid. Together, these treatments work to clean and tone the skin, while battling the production of any excess oil, leaving new skin clearer and smoother.
