Skincare dos and don'ts

  1. 1. Do have a balanced diet. Many physical effects from food, including skin problems, come from having too much or too little of a particular type of food.
  2. Don't use too much moisturiser. Thick creams can actually make it harder for your skin to absorb moisture, creating the very problems you are trying to avoid.
  3. Do take into account your skin type. For example, oily skin can stand up to more frequent use of exfoliating products. If you have dry skin, too much exfoliation can cause damage and irritation.
  4. Don't overdo it in the sun. Make sure to use at least SPF 15 protection and try to avoid direct exposure between 11am and 3pm when the levels of ultraviolet radiation, which cause burning, are at their highest.
  5. 5. Do give up smoking if necessary. The harmful effects of smoking on blood vessels can make it harder for the body to move oxygen around the bloodstream, which can mean less healthy skin.
  6. 6. Don't use too many different products at the same time. This can not only physically overload and irritate your skin, but it makes it much harder to work out what does and does not work for you.
  7. 7. Do make sure your face is properly cleaned before applying make-up as this will help avoid oily patches of skin being "trapped" and worsening.
  8. 8. Don't attempt to burst or pick off any pimples or blackheads. This causes damage that greatly increases the chances of scarring.
  9. 9. Do remember that even damaged skin isn't a lost cause and can be repaired. Clinical techniques such as microdermabrasion, peels and laser treatment can help reduce the visible effects of damage and even stimulate the skin's natural regeneration.
  10. 10. Don't be afraid to ask for professional advice. A good clinic will try to help you make informed decisions rather than push you into treatment you don't need.
